Wine at The Tower Arms
Here at the Tower Arms every wine is chosen for quality and for being a good example of its type - not just for its price. There is an eclectic selection from which to choose, starting with our House Wine, a fine drinking traditional Chartreux from a winery, set in beautiful countryside, just across the River Rhone from Avignon. There’s also a super Pinot Grigio from Trentino in northern Italy which may restore your faith in the variety and some excellent, reasonably priced, Australians and Chileans.
If you set your sights higher then we have an extensive range of quality wines culminating in fine vintages from leading estates in France and Spain. These wines are a rare treat and rise to the giddy heights of around £500 a bottle. High end wines may benefit from decanting and we will be happy to do so upon request. This may also help to chambré or aerate the wines and can be a useful way of discarding unwanted sediment, although sediment is not a bad sign. In fact, quite the opposite as it usually happens to wines that haven’t been overly filtered and is even found in good New World wines. It is also not uncommon for white wines to show a deposit of tartrate crystals; these are not a wine fault, just a natural precipitate.
There are many misconceptions as to what constitutes a corked wine. It is not where pieces of cork have fallen into the bottle when opening or even when the cork is smelly. A corked wine is caused by unseen bacteria in the cork that gives the wine a fusty smell which can then affect the taste.
Wine is always subject to some bottle variation - it is a natural product, after all. – that is one of it’s joys, and you may well find you disagree with some of our tasting notes. We do make some suggestions as to which foods our wines will complement but this, too, is subjective. Nowadays, when and how you enjoy wine is viewed much more a matter of personal choice and a good Merlot, for example, will go with just about anything.
Whatever wine you choose we hope you will enjoy it. As always, if you are not completely satisfied, let us know.
